## Colyseus

Reference project

Node.js/TypeScript multiplayer framework with authoritative rooms and synchronized state.

### Why we recommend it

Colyseus helps organize a game server around rooms, matchmaking and state replication. It is a focused option when the client renderer is already chosen and you need to implement server-owned multiplayer rules.

### When to choose it

- Real-time or turn-based browser games and small multiplayer sessions.
- Teams sharing TypeScript between server logic and a web client.

### What to consider

- It supplies networking infrastructure, not a renderer, complete game rules or automatic cheat prevention. Validate every client intent on the server.
- Hosting, TLS, persistence, monitoring and scaling are separate work; Colyseus Cloud is an optional commercial service.

### Start with this project

Follow the official server-project generator guide. In a separate server project define a room, schema state and validated messages, then connect two clients with the matching SDK. Exercise disconnect and reconnection before adding persistence.

## Nakama

Reference project

Game backend with player accounts, storage, matchmaking, social features and multiplayer sessions.

### Why we recommend it

Nakama is useful when an online game needs several connected backend services instead of only room synchronization. Custom server runtime code can enforce match rules and coordinate persistent player progress.

### When to choose it

- Online games with accounts, leaderboards, chat and persistent player data.
- A game client that needs a self-hosted, extensible multiplayer backend.

### What to consider

- It is a backend server without a renderer or finished gameplay. Client-relayed and server-authoritative matches require different designs; sensitive rules need server enforcement.
- Self-hosting requires a compatible database, backups, authentication configuration and operational monitoring. Managed and enterprise offerings are separate.

### Start with this project

Follow the official Docker installation for Nakama and its compatible database in an isolated development environment. Use a supported client SDK, add authentication and one authoritative match handler, then test storage permissions and reconnection.
