From signup to a first useful result
Designs the shortest understandable path from registration to a meaningful first result. Identifies unnecessary setup, proposes helpful empty states and measures whether the revised flow actually improves activation.

See how it helpsWhen is it useful?
Use it when people register but leave before completing a useful task.
What does it help you do?
- Defines a measurable first success and identifies where new users stop.
- Defers unnecessary setup and makes guidance dismissible.
- Compares activation and later retention without treating correlation as proof.
Try asking this
New CRM users register but never create a contact. Move optional company settings out of the first session and make the empty contact list offer one clear creation action. Measure completed first contacts and later return visits before deciding whether the change helped.

Onboarding and Activation
Get new users from first contact to their first meaningful result as fast as possible, honestly.
Define activation
- Activation is the early action that predicts people stay (created a first project and invited a teammate; connected data and saw a first report). Find it by comparing what retained and churned users did in their first days, on fully observed cohorts.
- Treat a correlated action as a hypothesis: test whether guiding users to it actually improves later retention.
- Track activation rate, time to activation, steps to activation, and onboarding drop-off per step, by cohort and source.
Shortest path to value
- List every step between signup and the first result: screens, fields, clicks, confirmations, permission prompts, waits.
- For each step ask: must the user do this now to reach value? If not, remove it, defer it, pre-fill it or make it skippable. Settings, profile completeness and feature education almost never belong before value.
- Rebuild in value-first order, measure, and iterate; the first version is a hypothesis.
- One goal per first session. Doing beats watching: let people use the product with their own or sample data rather than read a tutorial.
Signup
- Ask only for what is needed before first use (usually email or single sign-on, and a password or magic link); collect company, role and phone later.
- Labels stay visible; validate inline; never clear the form on an error; allow paste; show password rules up front.
- Say what happens next; let people explore while email verification is pending.
Guidance patterns
- Empty states explain what the area is for and offer one clear first action, optionally with sample data.
- Checklists: 3–7 items ordered by value, quick wins first, visible progress, dismissible.
- Tours: at most 3–5 steps, skippable at any moment, never repeated for returning users.
- Emails reinforce, never duplicate, the in-app path: welcome right away, a nudge when setup stalls (around 24 and 72 hours), a next step after activation. Each email has one specific action.
- Re-engage stalled users with a reminder of value, a way to resume where they left off, and an offer of help.
No dark patterns
- Every prompt has a visible way out; skipping or closing never punishes the user.
- No pre-checked consent boxes, no guilt-trip wording, no hidden or tiny close buttons, no fake urgency or invented scarcity.
- Trial terms are stated before signup: length, what happens at the end, whether a card is needed and when it will be charged. "No credit card required" only when true.
- Upgrade prompts come after value, not during onboarding or in the middle of a task, and respect a "not now" for days.
Before you finish
- Activation is defined and measurable; the current rate or "unknown" is stated.
- Every step before first value is justified, deferred or removed.
- Empty states, checklists, tours and emails have one clear next action each.
- Nothing traps, misleads or pressures the user.
