When is it useful?

Use when selecting a chart should filter other views without circular updates.

What does it help you do?

  • Stores shared filters and selections in one authoritative state.
  • Prevents charts from repeatedly triggering each other's update events.
  • Preserves scope, units and a clear path back from details.

Try asking this

Connect a regional sales chart to an order table and preserve filters when returning from an order. Filter to one region, open an order and navigate Back. The same scope, selected region and reconciled total should reappear without event loops.

Linked Views & Drill-Down

Use this skill when connecting multiple charts, KPI cards, and detail tables so brushing, clicking, or hovering in one view updates or highlights related views coherently.

Coordinated Multi-View State Architecture

  1. Single Source of Truth for Shared Selection & Filter State:
    • Maintain shared filter and selection dimensions (timeRange, granularity, selectedCategories, hoveredTimestamp, drillPath) in a unified dashboard state store (and sync bookmarkable filters to URL query parameters).
    • Separate transient highlight state (crosshair timestamp or hovered category, throttled via requestAnimationFrame) from committed filter state (brush release or category click, which triggers data queries or table filtering).
  2. Prevent Circular Update Loops:
    • When Chart A's brush updates the global timeRange and Chart B reflects that range, guard programmatic brush/zoom synchronization so Chart B does not re-emit a change event that triggers an infinite feedback loop.

Preserving Context & Metric Meaning Across Linked Views

  • Highlight-in-Context vs. Hard Subset Filtering:
    • When clicking a category segment in one chart, make it clear whether linked charts are filtered to that subset only or highlighting that subset against the total population (e.g., muted background bars for total + highlighted foreground bars for the selected segment).
  • Keep Denominators and Comparison Bases Honest:
    • When a drill-down narrows the view from "All Regions" to "Region = EMEA", update titles, subtitles, and percentage denominators explicitly so the user never mistakes a share-of-subplot (% of EMEA) for share-of-total (% of Global).
  • Clear Drill-Down Breadcrumbs & Escape Paths:
    • For hierarchical drill-downs (Year -> Quarter -> Month -> Day or Company -> Department -> Team -> Rep), render an interactive breadcrumb trail (All > EMEA > Enterprise) and a clear "Back / Reset" action.

Checklist

  • Do all linked charts, KPI cards, and tables derive from a single synchronized filter/selection state?
  • Are high-frequency hover/crosshair updates separated from committed filter changes so queries do not fire on hover?
  • Do titles, breadcrumbs, and percentage denominators clearly state whether a view shows the total population or a drilled-down subset?
  • Can the user step back up a drill-down hierarchy or clear a brush selection in one click or keypress?
