Reference project
Nakama
Game backend with player accounts, storage, matchmaking, social features and multiplayer sessions.
Why we recommend it
Nakama is useful when an online game needs several connected backend services instead of only room synchronization. Custom server runtime code can enforce match rules and coordinate persistent player progress.
When to choose it
- Online games with accounts, leaderboards, chat and persistent player data.
- A game client that needs a self-hosted, extensible multiplayer backend.
What to consider
- It is a backend server without a renderer or finished gameplay. Client-relayed and server-authoritative matches require different designs; sensitive rules need server enforcement.
- Self-hosting requires a compatible database, backups, authentication configuration and operational monitoring. Managed and enterprise offerings are separate.
Start with this project
Follow the official Docker installation for Nakama and its compatible database in an isolated development environment. Use a supported client SDK, add authentication and one authoritative match handler, then test storage permissions and reconnection.
